Udhaar Management: How to Recover Credit Faster Without Losing Customers

Udhaar is part of doing business in India. It keeps regular customers loyal, but unpaid credit is also the fastest way for a healthy shop to run short of cash. Here is how to give credit and still get paid on time.

Why udhaar becomes a problem

Giving credit is not the mistake. Losing track of it is. In most shops the trouble starts in the same few ways:

  • The amount is written on a scrap of paper, or not written at all.
  • Several small purchases pile up and nobody knows the real total.
  • The customer remembers a smaller figure than you do, and there is no record to settle it.
  • Asking for money feels awkward, so the reminder never happens.
  • Your own money is stuck with customers while your supplier wants payment.

7 rules for healthy udhaar

1. Record it at the moment of sale

Never plan to "write it down later". In BillKaro, udhaar is simply a payment option on the bill, next to cash and UPI. Choose it and the amount is added to that customer's ledger automatically.

2. Keep one ledger per customer

Each customer should have their own running account showing every credit sale and every payment. When someone asks "kitna baaki hai?", you can answer in seconds and show them the entries.

3. Show the previous due on every bill

When a customer with pending credit buys again, the BillKaro bill screen shows their previous due. It is a gentle, automatic reminder every time they visit, and you never have to raise the subject yourself.

4. Decide a limit for each customer

Fix in your own mind how much credit each customer can carry, based on how regularly they pay. Checking the ledger before giving more credit takes a few seconds and prevents the amounts that never come back.

5. Send reminders on WhatsApp

A polite written reminder is easier for you to send and easier for the customer to receive than a phone call. BillKaro sends udhaar reminders through WhatsApp with the amount due, so the message is clear and there is nothing to argue about.

6. Follow a regular schedule

Pick a fixed day, such as the first week of the month when salaries arrive, and send reminders to everyone with a balance. Regular, expected reminders feel like routine, not pressure.

7. Record part payments too

If a customer pays ₹500 against ₹2,000, enter it straight away. An up-to-date balance keeps trust on both sides.

Do not forget the other side: what you owe

Udhaar runs in two directions. While customers owe you, you owe your suppliers. BillKaro's supplier ledger records your purchases and shows, for each supplier, how much is paid and how much is still to pay. Seeing both sides together tells you your real cash position.

What good udhaar management gives you

  • Better cash flow. Money comes back sooner, so you can pay suppliers and restock on time.
  • No disputes. A clear record protects your relationship with the customer.
  • More confidence to give credit. When you know you can track it, you can say yes to good customers.
  • Less stress. You stop carrying the whole khata in your head.

Try this today: enter your five biggest pending udhaar accounts into BillKaro and send each one a WhatsApp reminder. Many shopkeepers recover old dues simply because the customer finally sees a clear amount.
